Abstract

The importance and necessity of acquiring an active citizenship awareness for refugee students in our country, which has become an increasingly emphasized issue day by day, also correspondingly increase in determining their integration into societal life. Active citizenship is the inclusion of all individuals in societal issues. Refugee children born in our country will, in the course of time, become active members of society, contributing to its development. Initiating social adaptation at the micro level through the child's awareness of active citizenship in schools facilitates their macro-level integration. In the study, document analysis, a qualitative research method, was employed. The technique used for data analysis is content analysis. Within the scope of the conducted research, the examined sections sequentially address the concept of active citizenship, values of active citizenship, migration, refugees, education of refugee students, social adaptation, and the concept of active citizenship. As a result of the study, it has been concluded that the active citizenship education provided in schools plays a significant role in the social integration of refugee students, leading to the development of a sense of belonging to the community. Consequently, it is emphasized that acquiring an awareness of active citizenship is crucial for social integration. It is observed that teachers play a necessary role in instilling citizenship awareness in refugee students for their adaptation to social life.
